Background

In the 1960s and 1970s, the composer's son Jasper Rootham devoted much time and energy in getting several of his father Cyril Rootham's works recorded.

Jasper got to know the conductors Richard Hickox and Vernon Handley, and with their help CBR's work emerged as commercial recordings through EMI (Richard Hickox) and Lyrita (Vernon Handley).

The British Library has a comprehensive sound archive at its St Pancras site, which contains several CBR recordings (including a few which are not available commercially). Please contact the British Library to find out whether you can make an appointment to hear these recordings:

You must be a registered reader at the British Library before you can request a hearing of any of these works. And you have to attend the British Library in person: you cannot listen over the internet.


Private recordings

We know of two recordings of CBR's choral works made by amateur choral societies. Eventually we hope to make both these recordings available for study purposes:
