This anthem was written in 1911 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of St John's College, where CBR was director of music and organist. The work is dedicated "To the Master and Fellows of St John's College, Cambridge".

The anthem "Hear the voice and prayer" Op.39 was composed to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the founding of St John's College, Cambridge in 1511. It sets verses from 2 Chronicles VI 19-23 and from Psalm XV 1,2,7 for voices SATB and organ.

The work is dedicated "To the Master and Fellows of St John's College, Cambridge". The words from Chronicles were originally used by Thomas Tallis around 1547, in what was one of the earliest anthems composed to a text in English as opposed to Latin.

Originally published by Stainer & Bell in 1911, the sheet music for this anthem can be ordered as 54093 Rootham: "Hear the voice and prayer".
