This quartet was written in 1902 by the composer Cyril Bradley Rootham (CBR), and is dedicated to the composer's father Daniel Wilberforce Rootham (1837-1922).
The sheet music for this work has never yet been published.
We are very grateful to Cambridge University Library for providing images of the original manuscript (shelfmark MS.Add.9101). Typesetting of the work is now complete, and after proofreading we intend to publish towards the end of 2019.
CBR's father started his own musical career as a lay clerk at two Cambridge colleges, one of which was St John's College.
On his marriage, Daniel moved to Bristol where he pursued a career as organist, choral director and singing coach. Daniel's pupils included Clara Butt (to whom the young composer CBR dedicated three of his Op.1 songs). Daniel was musical director of the Bristol Madrigal Society for 50 years and also directed the Bristol Festival Chorus.
